Wooden Box

Wooden Box

Overview

A simple wooden box is an excellent beginner woodworking project. It teaches accurate measuring, straight cuts, drilling, sanding and basic assembly.

For this guide, we will build a box approximately 30 cm long, 20 cm wide and 15 cm high. The dimensions can be changed, but following the recommended measurements makes the project easier for a beginner.

Difficulty: Easy
Estimated Time: 2-4 hours
Estimated Cost: $10-$20

Materials

  • Wooden board, approximately 12-18 mm thick
  • Wood screws
  • Wood glue
  • Sandpaper, approximately 120 and 220 grit
  • Wood filler (optional)
  • Wood oil, varnish or paint (optional)
  • Small hinges (optional)

Tools

  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Saw
  • Drill
  • Screwdriver or drill
  • Sandpaper
  • Clamps (optional)

Recommended Dimensions

For the beginner version:

  • Length: 30 cm
  • Width: 20 cm
  • Height: 15 cm
  • Wood thickness: approximately 15 mm
  • Bottom panel: 30 ร— 20 cm

For a simple square construction, keep all vertical cuts at 90ยฐ.

If using 15 mm thick wood, the two shorter side pieces should be adjusted so the finished box reaches the intended width.

Tips

  • Measure the thickness of your wood before calculating the side pieces.
  • Use the same reference edge when measuring multiple pieces.
  • Check the box with a square before permanently fixing the pieces.
  • If you plan to add a lid, test-fit it before applying any finish.
  • Sand the inside corners before assembly if they will be difficult to reach later.

Safety

  • Wear safety glasses when cutting or drilling.
  • Secure the wood before cutting.
  • Keep your hands away from the saw blade.
  • Do not force the drill if the bit becomes stuck.
  • Allow paint, oil or varnish to dry in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

Steps

Step 1 โ€” Measure the Pieces

Place the board on a stable work surface.

For the recommended version, mark the bottom panel at 30 ร— 20 cm.

Then mark:

  • 2 long side pieces
  • 2 short side pieces

Use the carpenter’s square to make every corner exactly 90ยฐ.

Before cutting, check the measurements and account for the thickness of the wood when determining the short side pieces.

Tip: Write the name of each piece directly on the wood. This prevents mixing up similar-looking pieces later.

Step 2 โ€” Cut the Wood

Secure the board firmly to your workbench.

Cut each piece slowly along the marked lines.

After each cut, check the edge with the carpenter’s square. If an edge is slightly uneven, sand it rather than making another large cut.

Keep the matching pieces together so you can compare them.

Tip: Cut one piece first and use it as a reference when marking the matching piece. This helps keep both pieces identical.

Step 3 โ€” Sand the Pieces

Begin with 120-grit sandpaper.

Sand the cut edges, corners and rough surfaces.

Then use approximately 220-grit sandpaper for a smoother finish.

Do not heavily round the edges because the pieces still need to fit together accurately.

Tip: Sand in a dry, well-ventilated area and remove dust before assembly. Dust left between joints can weaken the connection.

Step 4 โ€” Test-Fit the Box

Place the four side pieces around the bottom panel without glue or screws.

Check:

  • The corners meet correctly.
  • The sides are vertical.
  • The box is square.
  • The bottom sits correctly.

Measure the diagonals from opposite corners. If both diagonal measurements are approximately equal, the box is likely square.

Tip: Do not glue anything yet. This is the easiest moment to correct a measurement mistake.

Step 5 โ€” Assemble the Sides

Apply a thin layer of wood glue to the joining edges.

Bring the pieces together and use clamps to hold them in position if available.

Check each corner with the carpenter’s square.

Drill small pilot holes and install the screws.

Do not completely tighten one screw before installing the others. Tighten them gradually so the pieces remain aligned.

Tip: Wipe away excess glue immediately with a slightly damp cloth before it dries.

Step 6 โ€” Attach the Bottom

Place the assembled frame onto the bottom panel.

Make sure all four sides are positioned correctly.

Mark the screw locations from underneath.

Drill pilot holes and attach the bottom using screws.

Check that the screws are not so long that they pass through the wood.

Tip: If you are unsure about screw depth, compare the screw length with the combined thickness of the pieces before drilling.

Step 7 โ€” Check the Structure

Place the box on a flat surface.

Check that:

  • It does not rock.
  • The sides are straight.
  • The corners are square.
  • The bottom is secure.

If a corner is slightly misaligned, correct it before the glue fully cures.

Tip: Use the box on a flat table rather than the floor for this check. A perfectly flat surface makes small alignment problems easier to notice.

Step 8 โ€” Add a Lid (Optional)

For a lid, cut a panel slightly larger than the outside dimensions of the box.

For the recommended 30 ร— 20 cm box, a lid approximately 31 ร— 21 cm provides a small overhang.

Position the hinges along the back edge.

Mark the screw holes, drill small pilot holes and attach the hinges.

The hinge should sit at approximately 90ยฐ to the back edge when closed.

Tip: Test the lid several times before tightening all hinge screws. A small adjustment now can prevent the lid from rubbing against the box later.

Step 9 โ€” Final Sanding

Inspect the entire box.

Sand:

  • Corners
  • Edges
  • Screw areas
  • Any remaining rough surfaces

Use 220-grit sandpaper for the final pass.

Remove all dust with a vacuum or clean, dry cloth.

Tip: Run your hand gently over the wood after sanding. Your fingers will often detect rough spots that are difficult to see.

Step 10 โ€” Apply the Finish

Move the box to a clean, dry and well-ventilated area.

Apply paint, oil or varnish in thin, even coats.

Do not work in a dusty room or directly next to an active cutting or sanding area.

Allow each coat to dry according to the product instructions.

Tip: Keep the box elevated on clean supports while finishing it. This prevents the wet finish from sticking to your work surface.

Final Check

Make sure:

  • The box is square.
  • All joints are secure.
  • No screws are sticking out.
  • The surface is smooth.
  • The finish is completely dry.
  • The lid opens and closes correctly if installed.
