Bird House

Bird House

Overview

Building a simple bird house is a practical woodworking project that combines basic construction skills with an outdoor project.

For this guide, we will build a compact bird house approximately 20 cm wide, 20 cm deep and 25 cm high, with a sloped roof.

Difficulty: Easy
Estimated Time: 2-3 hours
Estimated Cost: $10-$20

Materials

  • Untreated wooden boards
  • Wood screws
  • Wood glue
  • Sandpaper, 120 and 220 grit
  • Exterior wood finish (optional)
  • Mounting hardware

Tools

  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Saw
  • Drill
  • Screwdriver
  • Wood drill bit
  • Sandpaper
  • Hole saw or suitable drill bit

Recommended Dimensions

For a simple starter bird house:

  • Width: 20 cm
  • Depth: 20 cm
  • Front/back height: approximately 25 cm
  • Side wall height: approximately 20 cm
  • Roof overhang: 2-3 cm
  • Roof slope: approximately 15-20ยฐ
  • Entrance hole: approximately 3-4 cm, depending on the bird species

Use dimensions appropriate for the species you want to attract.

Tips

  • Use untreated wood for the inside of the bird house.
  • Do not paint or varnish the interior.
  • Research the appropriate entrance-hole size for local bird species before drilling.
  • Give the roof a small overhang to help protect the entrance from rain.
  • Make the roof removable or provide another way to open the house for cleaning.
  • Place ventilation openings high on the side walls if needed.

Safety

  • Wear safety glasses when cutting or drilling.
  • Secure boards before cutting.
  • Be especially careful when using a large drill bit or hole saw.
  • Keep fingers away from moving tools.
  • Use a stable ladder and appropriate precautions when mounting the finished bird house.

Steps

Step 1 โ€” Mark the Panels

Mark the wooden panels according to the recommended dimensions.

You will need:

  • Front panel
  • Back panel
  • Two side panels
  • Bottom panel
  • Two roof panels

Use the carpenter’s square to keep the main edges at 90ยฐ.

The front and back panels should have the same basic width.

Tip: Label each piece with its position. Write “front”, “back”, “left”, “right” and “bottom” directly on the wood.

Step 2 โ€” Cut the Panels

Secure each board firmly before cutting.

Cut along your marked lines slowly.

After each cut, check the edges with the square.

Keep matching pieces together and compare them before moving on.

Tip: If two pieces are supposed to be identical, place them together after cutting. Any difference will be immediately visible.

Step 3 โ€” Mark the Entrance

Mark the center of the front panel.

For the recommended design, place the center of the entrance approximately 17-18 cm above the bottom edge.

Use a hole saw or suitable drill bit to create the entrance.

The diameter should be selected according to the bird species you want to attract.

Sand the inside and outside edges of the hole.

Tip: Drill slowly as the bit exits the wood. This helps prevent a large piece of wood from breaking away around the entrance.

Step 4 โ€” Add Ventilation and Drainage

If your design needs additional ventilation, drill small holes near the upper part of the side panels.

You can also drill several small drainage holes in the bottom panel.

Keep the holes small enough that they do not weaken the structure.

Tip: Perform this step before assembly. Drilling ventilation or drainage holes is much easier while the panels are still flat.

Step 5 โ€” Sand the Panels

Sand all surfaces with 120-grit sandpaper.

Finish with 220-grit on areas that will be touched or exposed.

Smooth the entrance hole carefully.

Tip: Do not make the inside perfectly polished. The goal is to remove dangerous splinters and sharp edges, not create a furniture-grade finish.

Step 6 โ€” Assemble the Main Body

Place the side panels against the back panel.

Apply a thin layer of wood glue to the joints.

Secure the pieces using screws and pilot holes.

Check that each corner remains approximately 90ยฐ.

Attach the opposite side in the same way.

Tip: Start all screws loosely before tightening them. This allows you to correct the alignment before the structure becomes rigid.

Step 7 โ€” Attach the Front Panel

Position the front panel against the assembled sides.

Check that the entrance is facing outward and is not blocked by another piece.

Apply glue, drill pilot holes and secure the panel with screws.

Tip: Before tightening everything, look through the entrance from the outside to make sure there is no obstruction inside.

Step 8 โ€” Attach the Bottom

Place the bottom panel underneath the structure.

Make sure it sits evenly against all four sides.

Secure it with screws.

Check that the drainage holes remain unobstructed.

Tip: Do not seal every possible opening around the bottom. Proper drainage is important for an outdoor bird house.

Step 9 โ€” Build the Roof

Create two roof panels that meet at the top.

For the recommended design, aim for a roof slope of approximately 15-20ยฐ.

Allow the roof to extend approximately 2-3 cm beyond the walls.

Attach the roof securely, but consider using screws rather than permanent glue if you want to remove it later for cleaning.

Tip: Test the roof pieces together before attaching them. The two panels should meet cleanly along the ridge.

Step 10 โ€” Finish and Install

If desired, apply an exterior finish to the outside surfaces only.

Work in a clean, dry and well-ventilated area.

Allow it to dry completely.

Mount the bird house securely in a suitable location.

Tip: Avoid installing it in a place exposed to constant disturbance or where predators can easily reach the entrance.

Final Check

Make sure:

  • The entrance is the correct size for the intended bird species.
  • There are no sharp edges or splinters.
  • The structure is secure.
  • The roof protects the entrance from rain.
  • Drainage holes are clear.
  • The inside is untreated.
  • The mounting is stable.
