Tool Cabinet
Overview
A wooden tool cabinet is a useful workshop project that combines cabinet construction, accurate panel cutting, door installation and storage planning.
For this guide, we will build a wall-mounted cabinet approximately 80 cm wide, 60 cm high and 25 cm deep.
Difficulty: Hard
Estimated Time: 8-14 hours
Estimated Cost: $80-$150
Materials
- Plywood or furniture-grade boards
- Wood screws
- Wood glue
- Cabinet hinges
- Door handle
- Wall-mounting hardware
- Sandpaper
- Paint, varnish or other finish
- Shelf supports
- Optional pegboard or tool hooks
Tools
- Measuring tape
- Pencil
- Carpenter’s square
- Saw
- Drill
- Screwdriver
- Clamps
- Level
- Sandpaper
- Stud finder if mounting to a framed wall
Recommended Dimensions
- Width: 80 cm
- Height: 60 cm
- Depth: 25 cm
- Material thickness: approximately 15-18 mm
- Shelves: approximately 23-24 cm deep
- Shelf spacing: approximately 20-25 cm
- Cabinet corners: 90ยฐ
- Door gap: approximately 2-3 mm
Tips
- Use plywood for a strong and dimensionally stable cabinet.
- Keep heavy tools on lower shelves.
- Leave enough clearance around the doors.
- Mount the cabinet to appropriate structural points in the wall.
- Do not rely on weak wall plugs for a cabinet carrying heavy tools.
- Plan tool locations before installing shelves permanently.
Safety
- Wear safety glasses when cutting and drilling.
- Secure large panels before cutting.
- Get help when moving the assembled cabinet.
- Use appropriate wall anchors.
- Do not load the cabinet until the wall mounting has been tested.
Steps
Step 1 โ Plan the Cabinet
Draw the cabinet from the front and side.
For the recommended version, aim for:
80 ร 60 ร 25 cm
Decide where the shelves and tools will go before cutting the panels.
Tip: Put heavier tools on the lower shelves. This keeps the center of gravity lower and makes the cabinet easier to use.
Step 2 โ Cut the Cabinet Panels
Prepare:
- Top
- Bottom
- Two sides
- Back panel
- Shelves
- Door
Keep the main corners at 90ยฐ.
Label every piece after cutting.
Tip: Cut the side panels first and use them as references when determining the shelf lengths.
Step 3 โ Sand the Panels
Sand the visible edges with 120-grit, then 220-grit.
Do not heavily round the joining edges because they need to remain straight.
Remove all dust before assembly.
Tip: Sand the inside panels now. They become much harder to reach once the cabinet is assembled.
Step 4 โ Assemble the Cabinet
Place the bottom panel between the sides.
Apply wood glue to the joints.
Drill pilot holes and install screws.
Add the top panel.
Check each corner with the carpenter’s square.
Tip: Clamp the cabinet before tightening all screws. This keeps the structure aligned while the joints are being fixed.
Step 5 โ Install the Back Panel
Place the cabinet face down on a flat surface.
Align the back panel carefully.
Secure it with screws around the perimeter.
The back panel helps keep the cabinet square, so do not skip this step.
Tip: Check both diagonals before fully securing the back panel. Correct the cabinet while you still can.
Step 6 โ Install the Shelves
Measure the desired shelf positions.
For the recommended cabinet, start with approximately 20-25 cm vertical spacing.
Mark the positions on both side panels so the shelves remain level.
Install shelf supports and place the shelves.
Tip: Use a small level across each shelf before fixing it permanently.
Step 7 โ Build the Door
Cut the door panel to fit the cabinet opening.
Leave approximately 2-3 mm clearance around the edges.
Sand the edges.
Position the hinges and mark the screw holes.
Tip: Do not make the door exactly the same size as the opening. A small clearance prevents it from rubbing when the wood moves.
Step 8 โ Install the Hinges and Handle
Attach the hinges to the door first.
Hold the door against the cabinet and mark the corresponding positions.
Secure the hinges to the cabinet.
Install the handle at a comfortable height.
Open and close the door several times to check alignment.
Tip: Start with the hinge screws slightly loose. Tighten them fully only after the door is aligned.
Step 9 โ Finish the Cabinet
Remove hardware if necessary before finishing.
Move the cabinet to a clean, dry and well-ventilated room.
Apply paint, oil or varnish in thin coats.
Allow everything to dry completely.
Tip: Do not finish the cabinet immediately after sanding in the same dusty room. Clean the workspace first.
Step 10 โ Mount the Cabinet
Determine where the cabinet will be installed.
Use appropriate mounting hardware for the wall.
If mounting to a framed wall, locate suitable structural points.
Use a level to keep the cabinet horizontal.
Secure the cabinet firmly.
Tip: The mounting system must be chosen based on the total loaded weight of the cabinet, not just the empty cabinet.
Step 11 โ Organize the Tools
Place heavier tools on lower shelves.
Use hooks, pegboard or small organizers for smaller tools.
Keep frequently used tools at comfortable height.
Tip: Leave some empty space. A cabinet filled completely from day one becomes difficult to reorganize when you buy additional tools.
Final Check
- Cabinet is square.
- Shelves are level.
- Door opens freely.
- Hinges are secure.
- Wall mounting is secure.
- Heavy tools are stored lower.
- Finish is completely dry.
