Phone Stand
Overview
A wooden phone stand is a small, useful project that teaches accurate measuring, cutting, drilling and creating simple angles.
For this guide, we will build a stand suitable for most smartphones using a simple two-piece design.
Materials
-
- Wooden board, approximately 15 mm thick
-
- Wood glue
-
- Sandpaper, 120 and 220 grit
-
- Small screws (optional)
-
- Wood oil, varnish or paint (optional)
-
- Rubber pads (optional)
Tools
-
- Measuring tape
-
- Pencil
-
- Carpenter’s square
-
- Saw
-
- Drill
-
- Sandpaper
-
- Ruler or angle guide
Tips
- Test the angle using scrap wood before making the final cut.
- Measure your phone’s thickness before deciding how high to make the front ledge.
- Leave enough space around the charging port if you want to charge the phone while using the stand.
- Add rubber pads underneath to prevent sliding.
- Sand every edge that could touch the phone.
Safety
-
- Wear safety glasses when cutting or drilling.
-
- Secure the wood before cutting.
-
- Keep fingers away from cutting tools.
-
- Do not hold small pieces directly in your hand while drilling.
Steps
Step 1 — Measure the Base
Mark a piece of wood at 15 × 8 cm.
Use the carpenter’s square to ensure the corners are exactly 90°.
This will become the bottom of the phone stand.
Tip: Mark the front of the piece with a pencil so you always know which direction the phone will face.
Step 2 — Cut the Base
Secure the wood and carefully cut along your marked lines.
Check the finished piece with the square.
If the edge is slightly uneven, use sandpaper to correct it.
Tip: For a small project like this, accuracy matters more than cutting speed.
Step 3 — Cut the Back Support
Mark another piece approximately 12 × 8 cm.
This piece will support the phone.
The bottom edge should remain straight, while the position of the support will create approximately a 70° viewing angle.
Cut the piece carefully and sand the edges.
Tip: Make a temporary version from cardboard first. Place your phone against it and adjust the angle before cutting the wood.
Step 4 — Create the Phone Ledge
Cut a small wooden strip approximately 8 × 2 cm.
This ledge prevents the phone from sliding forward.
Round or sand its edges thoroughly.
Tip: The ledge only needs to be high enough to hold the phone. Making it unnecessarily large can cover part of the screen.
Step 5 — Test the Assembly
Place the support on the base without glue.
Position the ledge at the front.
Place your phone on the stand and check:
-
- Viewing angle
-
- Stability
-
- Screen visibility
-
- Access to the charging port
Adjust the position before permanently attaching anything.
Tip: This is the most important test of the project. Fixing the design now is much easier than removing glued pieces later.
Step 6 — Attach the Support
Apply a thin layer of wood glue where the support meets the base.
Position it at approximately 70°.
Use a clamp or temporary support to hold it in position while the glue dries.
For additional strength, install small screws after drilling pilot holes.
Tip: Work on a flat surface so the support does not move while the glue sets.
Step 7 — Attach the Front Ledge
Position the ledge approximately 2-3 cm from the front edge of the base.
Check that the phone sits securely against it.
Apply glue and secure the ledge.
Tip: Test the phone again before the glue dries completely so you can make small adjustments if necessary.
Step 8 — Sand the Stand
Sand the entire stand with 120-grit sandpaper.
Finish with 220-grit.
Pay special attention to every surface that may touch your phone.
Tip: Sand in a clean, dry area and remove all dust before applying any finish.
Step 9 — Finish the Stand
Apply paint, oil or varnish in a clean, dry and well-ventilated room.
Avoid working in an area where sawdust is being produced.
Apply thin coats and allow each coat to dry completely.
Tip: Place the stand on clean supports while drying so the finish does not stick to the table.
Step 10 — Add Rubber Pads
Attach small rubber pads underneath the base.
Place one near each corner.
These pads help prevent the stand from sliding and protect the surface underneath.
Tip: Clean the bottom of the stand before attaching the pads so the adhesive can bond properly.
Final Check
Final Check
Make sure:
-
- The stand does not rock.
-
- The phone sits securely.
-
- The viewing angle is comfortable.
-
- The charging port remains accessible if required.
-
- All surfaces are smooth.
-
- The finish is completely dry.
